Yarn and hook
I crocheted Buddy the Elf Ornament in fingering and #2 weight cotton with a 2.0 and 2.5 mm hook, which gives the 4 in / 10 cm, chin to hat tip ornament in the photos. Any yarn weight works here: the pattern is the same, and a heavier yarn with a bigger hook simply gives you a bigger ornament. Match the hook to whatever you already have in the cupboard.
